Beyond Barolo: Classic Nebbiolo without the pricetag

Beyond Barolo

Here at WINEDEPOT, we’re here for your Nebbiolo needs.

In this update, we’re looking beyond the leading lights of Barolo and Barbaresco to a more affordable option. Wines with so much of the pleasure, yet without the pricetag – especially when you buy them from MARKET…

Nebbiolo

Even in the two short years of WINEDEPOT’s history, we’ve seen the rise of Piedmont’s king of wine, with this hallowed region’s famed Nebbiolo unquestionably more popular than ever – no doubt helped by ever more unrealistic prices for equivalent Bordeaux and Burgundy.

But there’s more to Nebbiolo than just Gaia or Conterno. Locally, we’re crafting ever more sophisticated examples, with the hills and valleys of NE Victoria and the Adelaide Hills proving that Nebbiolo doesn’t stop when you hit the Mediterranean.

Even in Nebbiolo’s heartland, there is a swathe of delicious wines sourced from the Langhe hills that offer up so much of the charisma of Barolo or Barbaresco, yet without the ‘must-have’ wine pricetag.

For a perfect example of what is available, look only at a wine producer that is brand-new to WINEDEPOT, Virago.
Focused solely on Nebbiolo, this Beechworth newcomer is offering up wines that would make even committed Baroli fans take notice.

Vigneron Karen Coats’ small, incredibly focused vineyard delivers a rare combination of fruit intensity and natural tannic depth, and with the wines made by superstar Giaconda winemaker Rick Kinzbrunner, it’s little wonder that the Virago reputation grows by the day.

For another take on great Australian Nebbiolo, look only at Col McBryde and Jen Gardner’s Adelina Nebbiolo, which feels wonderfully Italianate in structure and style, without losing its Clare Valley personality. James Scarcebrook’s Vino Intrepido Nebbiolo, from the fabled Malakoff Vineyard, provides a vibrant take on the grape too, with a style that is effortless – and just perfect as a by-the-glass option.

Finally, you shouldn’t miss the pack of Langhe Nebbiolo that we have on MARKET. Here, you can experience the magic of Piedmont’s hero producers – including Massolino, Albino Rocca or Luciano Sandrone – but with approachability.
