Demystifying organic and biodynamic wines

The demand for sustainability and all-natural products grows stronger every passing year. We’re proud to support our partner wineries who are crafting the most unique of wines with unmatched methods and philosophies. Through this blog, we want to highlight some of these mindful, organic and biodynamic vineyards, who are paving the way for the future.

Paxton Wines

Paxton Wines stand out from the crowd for their eco-consciousness and biodynamic techniques. The Paxton family set their roots in McLaren Vale four decades ago and remain as a family business to this day.

“We believe biodynamics is the most advanced form of organic farming. It uses natural preparations and composts to bring the soil and vine into balance, resulting in exceptionally pure and expressive fruit. Healthy vines make better wines” – Founder and Owner David Paxton.

With a focus on soil health and balanced biodiversity, they avoid synthetic fertilisers and pesticides, and instead use biodynamic preparation principles with calcium-enriched compost and encourage natural regulation of pests and disease. 

To avoid undesired treatments in compost, the winemakers keep their own non-drenched cattle. 

You’ll find native trees intertwined with their grapevines and bees doing what they do best – vine pollination!

Gemtree Wines

Many believe biodynamic farming is a myth – maybe even witchcraft! Gemtree Wines are myth busters of their own by demonstrating their result-driven method of growing a healthy harvest by avoiding the chemical or artificial additives.

Angove McLaren Vale 

Established in 1886, Angove became a leading Certified Organic grape grower (in both international and Australian standards) and winemaker in 2006 after dedicating themselves to producing wines with better balance and fruit concentration. 

Not only have they reduced greenhouse gas emissions, they also produce minimal landfill contributions.

Through innovative sustainable farming and production techniques they were able to abandon synthetic fertilisers, pesticides, fungicides/herbicides which are known to be harmful to the environment.

Their hardest working employees are their ducks – they eliminate and manage pests! Their Indian Runner Duck breed holds a very high-level responsibility of maintaining a pest-free environment whilst fertilizing the soil (if you know what we mean!).
